Travel to Aspen will look very different for much of 2027. Aspen/Pitkin County Airport (ASE) is scheduled to close from April 4 through November 19, 2027 as part of a major airport modernization project. During the closure, both commercial and general aviation operations will be suspended, meaning travelers who would normally fly directly into Aspen will need to arrive through another airport.
For business travelers, private aviation passengers, families and groups planning time in Aspen, the airport closure doesn't mean Aspen becomes inaccessible. It simply makes planning the ground portion of the trip much more important.
At Rocky’s Worldwide Transportation, we provide private chauffeured transportation throughout Colorado, including long-distance service to Aspen and the surrounding mountain communities. With travelers expected to rely more heavily on alternative airports during the closure, arranging transportation in advance can make the difference between a complicated arrival and a well-planned trip into Aspen.
Why Is Aspen/Pitkin County Airport Closing?
The closure is part of the Aspen/Pitkin County Airport Modernization Project. The airport plans to completely reconstruct and shift its existing runway to meet current FAA design standards. Construction on a new commercial passenger terminal and Fixed Base Operator facility is also scheduled to begin during this period.
The airport is scheduled to close at 11:00 p.m. on April 4, 2027, and reopen at 7:00 p.m. on November 19, 2027. Airport officials have stated that no commercial or general aviation operations will be permitted at ASE during the closure.
That is a significant period without direct air service into Aspen, and travelers planning 2027 trips should begin thinking beyond ASE.
Which Airports Can Travelers Use Instead?
Aspen/Pitkin County Airport identifies several regional alternatives for commercial travelers during the closure: Denver International Airport (DEN), Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE), Grand Junction Regional Airport (GJT), and Montrose Regional Airport (MTJ). Rifle Garfield County Airport is also expected to remain available for general aviation.
The best airport will depend on the traveler's flight options, origin, schedule and final destination. A nonstop flight into one airport combined with private ground transportation may make more sense than a complicated connecting itinerary through another.
That is why the entire trip should be considered from door to door rather than choosing an airport based only on its distance from Aspen.
Denver to Aspen Chauffeured Transportation
For travelers arriving through Denver International Airport, Rocky’s can provide direct private transportation from DEN to Aspen.
Instead of landing in Denver, renting a vehicle and navigating the drive into the mountains, travelers can be met by a professional chauffeur and continue directly toward Aspen in a private vehicle.
For executives and business travelers, the drive can also provide valuable uninterrupted time after the flight. Passengers can work, make calls when appropriate, prepare for upcoming meetings or simply relax while the chauffeur handles the drive.
Rocky’s provides executive sedans, SUVs, Sprinters and larger vehicles depending on the number of passengers and requirements of the trip.
Eagle, Grand Junction and Montrose to Aspen
Denver will not be the only option.
Travelers may find that Eagle County Regional Airport, Grand Junction Regional Airport or Montrose Regional Airport works better for a particular itinerary. Rocky’s can coordinate private chauffeured transportation based on the airport selected and the passenger's destination in Aspen or the surrounding area.
This becomes especially useful for families, executive groups and travelers carrying significant luggage or ski equipment who want transportation arranged before they arrive.
Instead of figuring out the next part of the trip after landing, the airport arrival and the drive to Aspen can be planned as one continuous itinerary.
Private Aviation Travelers Will Need to Plan Differently Too
The closure isn't limited to commercial airlines. Aspen/Pitkin County Airport has confirmed that general aviation operations will also be suspended during the closure.
Private aviation travelers who normally use ASE will therefore need to consider another airport for their aircraft and arrange the remaining ground transportation into Aspen.
For travelers accustomed to the efficiency of private aviation, having a professionally chauffeured vehicle positioned at the alternate airport helps preserve that experience on the ground. The passenger can move from aircraft to vehicle and continue toward Aspen without having to arrange transportation after arrival.
Mountain Transportation Requires Planning
Traveling into Colorado's mountain communities is different from a typical city transfer. Distance, elevation, weather, traffic and seasonal road conditions can all influence the trip.
That makes advance planning particularly important during a period when thousands of travelers who would normally arrive directly at ASE may be entering Aspen by road instead.
At Rocky’s, our chauffeurs are expected to arrive 15 minutes early, clients receive reservation status updates, and our 24/7 dispatch team remains available throughout the reservation. If an arriving flight changes or an itinerary needs to be adjusted, there is a team behind the transportation to help keep the trip coordinated.
Plan Aspen Transportation Before You Arrive
The 2027 Aspen airport closure will change how travelers reach one of Colorado's most important mountain destinations, but it doesn't have to make the trip difficult.
The key is planning the flight and ground transportation together.
Whether your itinerary brings you through Denver, Eagle, Grand Junction, Montrose or another airport, Rocky’s Worldwide Transportation can arrange private chauffeured transportation to Aspen based on your schedule and travel requirements.
With the closure scheduled to last from April through November 2027, travelers planning business trips, vacations, events and extended stays in Aspen should arrange their transportation well in advance.
